“The Dial” was a termly printed magazine of Queens’ College Cambridge, spanning nearly a half-century of student life and thought, from 1906 to 1953.
The original title of the magazine was The Queens’ Courier, which was changed to The Dial for the third edition onwards.
Although there were occasional articles contributed by Fellows (and even a President), the writing, editing, and production was student-led, with a Fellow as Censor. The intended readers were the current students and recent alumni. The magazine was financed by subscriptions from the readers.
The entire series has been digitized to high quality, and placed online in this archive. Each edition is provided as a PDF document. Each page has been scanned at 600dpi, and manually cleaned. Halftone material (such as photographs) has been de-screened and contrast-enhanced. The textual content has been subject to Optical Character Recognition, with full manual correction: this enables searching for text within each edition, and complete indexing by web-search engines. Metadata has been added so that web-search results are correctly labelled. The content has been tagged for use with screen readers and assistive technology for the visually impaired. Blank pages have been omitted. Of necessity, the copies linked here have been subject to lossy compression in order to achieve a reasonable size for distribution over the web to mobile devices: lossless versions are available on request.
